Abstract
The present study aims to examine the relationship between diplomacy and the battlefield in resolving regional conflicts based on the approach of General Qassem Soleimani during 2010–2020. The main research question is: how has the relationship between diplomacy and the battlefield been in managing regional conflicts according to Soleimani’s practice? The main problem is to identify how the interaction and mutual reinforcement of diplomacy and field operations contribute to the management of regional disputes, with emphasis on the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Using Joseph Nye’s theoretical framework of smart power, this qualitative research employs an analytical-descriptive method. Data were collected through library research and analysis of credible documents. The findings reveal that General Soleimani achieved a successful smart power model by strategically combining hard and soft power. By forming strategic alliances with proxy groups such as Hezbollah and the Houthis, as well as utilizing cultural and media diplomacy, he significantly influenced regional developments and strengthened the Resistance Axis. The study shows that battlefield-oriented diplomacy in Soleimani’s practice fostered cohesion among local groups and bolstered strategic partnerships, leading to reduced tensions, effective conflict management, and consolidation of Iran’s strategic position in the Middle East. The results underscore the importance of smart power and the interplay between diplomacy and the battlefield as an effective crisis management tool, offering a practical model for policymakers designing regional strategies.
